A new format has real tradeoffs.
Renaming a file is not conversion. A real converter reads supported content and writes a newly encoded copy.
PNG: transparency and rendered pixels
PNG keeps transparent areas and is useful for diagrams or sharp-edged artwork. Our PNG output preserves pixels drawn to the canvas. That does not promise identical bytes, color profiles or metadata, and the copy may be larger.
JPEG: photographs, with a background
JPEG cannot keep transparency. A transparent logo needs a white, black or chosen background. FieldWise uses white unless you choose black, and asks you to acknowledge possible flattening for PNG/WebP input. JPEG is lossy; look for artifacts near text and edges.
WebP: check destination and browser
WebP can store transparency and compressed photographs, but the destination must accept it and the browser must provide an encoder. If a request falls back to PNG, FieldWise rejects that result instead of writing a misleading extension. Canvas documentation explains why actual MIME checks matter.
Metadata and animation are separate concerns.
Raster re-encoding can change or omit metadata and color information. This is not an EXIF audit or secure metadata-removal guarantee. Animated PNG/WebP, GIF, HEIC, SVG and PDF are outside this collection. We reject them instead of quietly dropping frames or using outside conversion services.
Keep an untouched source.
Repeated JPEG/WebP conversion can add damage. Prepare copies from the original, compare the final file, and run the requirement checker after saving.
